Safe Kids St. Charles County in Partnership with CDC on PDF Print E-mail
WHO, UNICEF AND CDC release studies to bring child injury prevention to worldwide public health agenda, create awareness around the world Safe Kids St. Charles County, as part of the Safe Kids USA and Safe Kids Worldwide networks, is supporting a new global effort to reduce the number of unintentional injuries to children around the world.  Currently, about 700,000 children die from unintentional injuries every year around the world – more than from all childhood diseases combined. Driving the new initiatives are two new studies – one focusing on the international issues of childhood injuries and another focusing on the problem in the United States.   The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund’s (UNICEF) yesterday released the World Report on Child Injury Prevention, and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) today released the U.S.-based study CDC Childhood Injury Report: Patterns of Unintentional Injuries among 0-19 Year Olds in the United States, 2000 – 2006.   The reports highlight the leading killers and disablers of children, namely road traffic injuries, drowning, falls, burns and poisons.  In addition to data that will be used to inform injury prevention programs, the reports contain recommendations for programs, policies, enforcement, and education efforts to bring about a reduction in the number of children injured and killed each year.  “Based on the research and recommendations contained in these comprehensive reports, Safe Kids St. Charles County will be redoubling and fine-tuning its efforts to better address unintentional injuries to children,” said David Horning, coordinator of Safe Kids St. Charles County.  “We are pleased to see that the work we do here in our community is a building block for an effort that has taken on global significance on the international public health agenda.”

CDC Initiative:  Protect the Ones You Love: Child Injuries Are Preventable

As a call to action in response to the U.S. report, the CDC’s Injury Center today launched a national initiative it calls Protect the Ones You Love: Child Injuries Are Preventable, in Arlington, Va., bringing together a network of childhood injury prevention professionals to identify policies and national/local strategies that will empower parents to help keep their children safe from childhood injuries.  Safe Kids USA representatives were panelists and speakers at the event. As part of the initiative, the CDC’s Injury Center has developed a number of resources, including fact sheets, podcasts, e-cards, and media and event planning guides.  Find these and other tools, all available free of charge, at www.cdc.gov/safechild.   To learn more about preventing accidental injury – please visit www.usa.safekids.org.  For more information on the WHO report, visit www.who.int.    Safe Kids St. Charles County is a member of Safe Kids USA’s national child safety network.  Safe Kids USA is, in turn, a member of the powerful global child safety network of Safe Kids Worldwide.  Using a multi-faceted approach that involves effective grassroots actions, public education programs, engineering and environmental modifications, enactment and enforcement of laws and regulations, and strong research to drive initiatives, Safe Kids St. Charles County is working in the St. Peters area to protect children on the local level from preventable injuries. Safe Kids St. Charles County’s ranks include volunteers, parents, health and safety experts, educators, law enforcement officers, firefighters, businesses, government leaders and policymakers who work tirelessly to promote changes in attitudes, behaviors, laws and the environment to prevent injuries to children.

Safe Kids St. Charles County was founded in 2004 and is led by Central County Fire & Rescue.
